We present the well-known proof by Ray and Singer of the variation of the trace of the heat-kernel with respect to a family of metrics on a manifold with boundary under appropriate boundary conditions. This proof plays a key role in the study of the variation of the analytic torsion on a manifold with or without boundary, by allowing to study the variation of the analytic torsion by means of the heat-kernel asymptotics.
