In statistical physics, an irreversible macroscopic behaviour can emerge from a reversible model through mixing by a transport operator (Landau damping). I will show how this can be captured mathematically and examine how critical points affect the observed decay. Adding microscopic collisions to the model yields a degenerate dissipation operator and I will discuss the interaction with the transport operator (enhanced dissipation). Finally, I will present how a degenerate dissipation operator can provide regularity by developing a De Giorgi/Nash/Moser theory for hypoelliptic operators.
